Custom White Oak Dining Tables Handcrafted in Portland

What Makes White Oak Special

White oak isn't walnut. It more than holds its own as a refined, more subtle wood that is still packed with a complexity that sets it apart from anything else I work with. The quarter sawn figure reveals tight straight grain and dramatic ray flecks that catch the light in ways that are quietly extraordinary. It draws you in and rewards the closer look. Dense, hard, and exceptionally durable, white oak makes a table built for real life with a classic look.

Quarter Sawn, Not Plain Sawn

Most people who think they don't like white oak are remembering plain sawn white oak. The flat, featureless boards that showed up in kitchen cabinets throughout the 1980s and 90s. That wood and what I work with are barely the same species.

Quarter sawing cuts the log at a different angle, exposing the medullary rays that run through the wood. The result is a tight, straight grain with dramatic ray flecks that shimmer and shift as the light changes. It is more stable than plain sawn, less prone to movement with changes in humidity, and far more visually interesting. Quarter sawn white oak is what gives high end furniture and architecture its refined, considered character.

The Finish

I finish all of my white oak tables with Rubio Monocoat, the same premium VOC-free hardwax oil I use on all of my work. On white oak it does something special. Applied naturally it brings out a warm amber tone that deepens the ray flecks and gives the wood a rich, lived-in quality. Applied as a white wash it creates a lighter, more contemporary look that is clean and architectural.

Both options are durable, spot repairable, and require minimal maintenance. The finish you choose changes the character of the table significantly. It is one of the most important decisions in the build and one I am happy to talk through with you.

White Oak Dining Table Styles

Live EdgeThe natural edge of the tree is preserved, giving your table an organic one-of-a-kind silhouette. White oak live edge has a particularly clean, architectural quality that works beautifully in modern spaces.

Straight Edge — Clean, squared lines that let the quarter sawn figure do the talking. The most popular choice for white oak and a natural fit for contemporary and transitional interiors.

Bookmatched Two consecutive boards from the same log joined down the center so the grain mirrors itself perfectly. The ray flecks in quarter sawn white oak make for a particularly striking bookmatch.
